Time Duration Calculator

Work out the hours and minutes between two times, or add and subtract a duration from a time. Handles shifts that run past midnight.

How do I work out a night shift?

Enter the times as they are. When the end time is earlier in the day than the start, this calculator reads it as the next day and adds 24 hours automatically. A 22:30 to 06:15 shift comes out as 7 hours 45 minutes, not a negative number.

What if the gap is longer than a day?

Switch on "the end time is tomorrow" to force a full extra day, which covers a 24 to 48 hour span. For anything longer, the date difference calculator is the right tool, since it counts calendar days.

Can I use this for a timesheet?

Yes. Work out each day separately and add the decimal hours, which is the figure most payroll systems want. An 8 hour 15 minute day is 8.25 hours, not 8.15.

Why is 8 hours 15 minutes not 8.15 hours?

Because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100. Fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour, so it is 0.25. Divide the minutes by 60 to convert: 15 / 60 = 0.25, and 45 / 60 = 0.75.

Does it handle seconds?

Yes. Enter a time as HH:MM:SS and the seconds are carried through every calculation. Leave them out and they are treated as zero.

What happens when subtracting goes past midnight?

The clock wraps back to the previous day and the result says so. Taking 3 hours 50 minutes off 02:15 gives 22:25 the day before.
