What is a good hike in India?

Average annual increments have run around 9% to 10% in recent years, with top performers getting more and a switch of employer typically worth 20% to 30%. Anything under inflation is a cut, whatever the letter calls it.

Why is my real hike lower than hike minus inflation?

Because the two compound rather than stack. A 15% raise against 6% inflation leaves 1.15 / 1.06 = 1.0849, so 8.49% in real terms. Subtracting gives 9%, which flatters the number by half a point.

Is a hike on CTC the same as a hike on take-home?

No, and the gap surprises people. CTC includes the employer PF contribution and often a variable component that may not pay out in full. A 15% CTC hike can be a 12% take-home hike, or less if the variable share grew.

How do I work out the hike I was actually given?

Switch to the second mode and enter both figures. Compare like with like: old CTC against new CTC, or old in-hand against new in-hand. Mixing the two is the most common way people miscount their own raise.

What hike do I need to reach a target salary?

Use the third mode. Going from ₹6,00,000 to ₹9,00,000 needs 50%, which is rarely a single increment - it is usually two job changes or a promotion plus a switch.

Should I compare offers on CTC?

Compare on in-hand plus anything you can actually bank. A higher CTC with a large variable component, a notice buyout you have to repay, or no employer PF can leave you worse off than a lower one.
