EDLI Calculator

Work out the EDLI insurance benefit your nominee would receive, from your average wage and average EPF balance, with the floor and ceiling applied.

Do I pay anything for EDLI?

Nothing at all. The employer contributes 0.5% of your wages up to the ₹15,000 ceiling, which is ₹75 a month at most, and no deduction comes out of your salary. Every EPF member is covered automatically, with no medical test and no application.

Why does my high salary not increase the benefit?

Because the wage used is capped at the same ₹15,000 ceiling EPF uses for the pension. Somebody on ₹15,000 and somebody on ₹1,50,000 get exactly the same wage component. The benefit cannot exceed ₹7,00,000 whatever you earn, which is why it is a floor and not a plan.

Why does it ask for my average balance?

Because the scheme does. The bonus component is half your average EPF balance over the preceding twelve months, not the balance on the day of the claim. If you withdrew for a house or a wedding during that year, the average drops and so does the benefit, sometimes by a lakh or more.

Is EDLI paid after I retire?

No. It covers death while still in service, and it ends the day you leave the job. A member who resigns, retires, or is between jobs is not covered, and the family of a retired member receives nothing under this scheme. The EPS pension is what continues after retirement.

How does the nominee claim it?

Form 5 IF, filed along with the EPF and EPS claims, usually through the employer. EPFO says claims are settled within twenty days. Make sure your nomination is filed and current, because without one the money goes to the legal heirs and the process takes far longer.

Is seven lakh enough life cover?

For most families with dependants, no. A term plan large enough to replace your income for a decade or more usually costs a few hundred rupees a month at a young age. Treat EDLI as a floor that already exists, and size your term cover as though it were not there.
