Work out a GPA from course grades and credit hours on any scale, fold in a prior record, and convert the result to a 4.0 scale for applications abroad.
Why is GPA not just the average of my grades?
Because courses carry different credit weights. A four credit course counts twice as much as a two credit one, so a poor grade in a heavy course hurts far more. Averaging the letters ignores that entirely.
How do I work out my cumulative GPA?
Enter this term’s courses, then add your prior GPA and the credits it covers in the second group. The calculator combines them properly, which is not the same as averaging the two GPAs - that only works when the credit counts match.
How is GPA different from CGPA?
They are the same idea on different scales. Indian universities usually use a 10 point CGPA, while US institutions use 4.0. Use the CGPA page to turn a 10 point figure into a percentage, and this one to build a GPA from courses.
How do I convert my Indian CGPA to a 4.0 GPA?
Scaling proportionally gives a rough figure - an 8.2 on 10 becomes 3.28 on 4 - and this page shows it. Most US universities will not accept that on its own and want a WES or similar credential evaluation, which uses the grade distribution rather than a straight ratio.
What grade points does a letter grade carry?
Commonly A is 4.0, A- is 3.7, B+ is 3.3, and B is 3.0, but institutions vary and some award an A+ at 4.3. Read the values off your own grade card. The table on this page is a reference, not a rule.
Do failed or repeated courses count?
It depends on the institution. Many count an F as zero grade points while still counting its credits, which drags the GPA down hard. Some replace the grade on a repeat and some average the two. Check your academic handbook before assuming.
