Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a trip costs in fuel. Enter the distance, your mileage, and the pump price. Handles round trips, CNG by the kilogram, and splitting the cost.

What mileage should I enter?

The one you actually get, worked out from your own refills: divide the kilometres covered by the litres it took to fill up. Real-world mileage usually runs 15% to 30% below the rated figure once you count city traffic and the air conditioning.

Does this work for CNG?

Yes. Switch the unit to kilograms and enter your km/kg and the price per kg. The arithmetic is identical, only the unit changes. CNG usually works out much cheaper per kilometre than petrol.

What is a fair way to split fuel with passengers?

Divide the total by everyone travelling, including the driver, which is what this page does. Some groups exclude the driver as a courtesy for the wear on their car. Agree before the trip, not at the destination.

Should I include tolls?

This page covers fuel only. On a long highway drive in India, tolls can add a meaningful amount, so look up the route on the NHAI toll calculator and add it separately.

How do I compare driving with taking a train?

Use the cost per kilometre here, then add tolls and parking. Fuel alone understates driving, because tyres, servicing, and depreciation cost real money too. A rough all-in figure is fuel cost plus 40% to 60%.

Why does my mileage drop in the city?

Stop-start traffic burns fuel while you move nowhere, and idling gives you zero kilometres per litre. A car rated at 20 km/l on the highway often gives 12 to 14 in a city, so enter separate numbers for the two parts of a long trip.
