Convert CGPA to percentage and back, using the CBSE 9.5 multiplier, a plain 10, the VTU formula, or your own university factor. Shows how far the methods differ.
Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?
CBSE derived it from the average marks of students who scored between 91 and 100 across five years of results. It applies to the Class 10 CGPA on the 10 point scale. It is a board convention, not a universal rule, so a university CGPA should not be converted with it unless the university says so.
Which method should I use?
The one printed in your own university handbook or on the back of your grade card. If it is not stated, ask the examination office. Choosing a method because it gives a better number is the fastest way to have an application rejected.
How do I convert percentage back to CGPA?
Divide instead of multiply. Under CBSE, CGPA = percentage / 9.5, so 77.9% is 8.2. Under the VTU formula, CGPA = percentage / 10 + 0.75. Switch the mode above and this page does it.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA covers one semester. CGPA is the weighted average of every semester so far, weighted by the credits in each. Convert the CGPA, not a single SGPA, when an application asks for your overall score.
Will an employer accept my converted percentage?
Usually only with proof. Many employers and almost all foreign universities want a conversion certificate issued by your institution. Use this page to know where you stand, then get the official document before you submit anything.
Does this work for a 4 point GPA?
Set the scale to 4 and use your own multiplier. There is no single accepted 4 point to percentage conversion either, and US institutions usually want a WES or similar credential evaluation rather than a straight multiplication.
