Why does this page ask for one payer only?

Because section 194A works payer by payer. The readable law page says the threshold is computed with reference to the income credited or paid by that bank, that co-operative bank, or that post-office scheme. Two banks paying ₹45,000 each can both correctly deduct nothing even though your total interest is ₹90,000.

Why can the same interest carry TDS for one person and nil for another?

Because the law gives a resident senior citizen a higher threshold. On the readable FY 2026-27 page, the ordinary threshold is ₹50,000 and the resident-senior threshold is ₹1,00,000. The rate above the threshold is still 10% for both. What changes is when the payer starts deducting.

Does TDS mean this is my final tax on the interest?

Accepted Answer

No. TDS is a payment on account, not the final liability. The bank can correctly deduct 10% and you can still owe more if your slab is higher, or get some back if your total tax is lower. This page checks the deduction line, not the final tax bill.

What if the figure matches neither nil nor 10%?

Accepted Answer

Then the payer may have used a branch this page deliberately does not quote. The common ones are a Form 15G or 15H declaration, a lower-deduction certificate, a no-PAN higher-rate branch, or a different base from the interest figure you typed. This page tells you when the ordinary published 194A readings do not explain the line; it does not guess the missing branch.

Does this cover every section 194A interest line?

Accepted Answer

No. It is limited to the bank, co-operative-bank and post-office deposit path for FY 2026-27 under the Income-tax Act 2025. It does not quote other 194A payers, and it does not quote earlier years under the Income-tax Act 1961 even though those thresholds were different.
